Shanghai Tang,  the contemporary Chinese chic label new Shanghai Tang Mansion Flagship Store in Hong Kong will open in April 2012.

Last October, Shanghai Tang Loft operated on the 6th floor of Pedder Building in Central, Hong Kong. Then Shanghai Tang blew us away with the magnificent Shanghai Tang Mongolian Village complete with beautiful Mongolian Ger tents at Central Pier 4 for the festive season.

This Spring, Shanghai Tang continues its innovative concepts and rolled out a two-part teaser video campaign, "From Pedder to..." with exclusive preview for its Facebook fans, in celebration of the new Shanghai Tang Mansion flagship launch.

Twelve gorgeous ladies dressed in the latest Shanghai Tang signature green knot silk crepe dress from the Spring Summer 2012 collection departed from Pedder Building and strutted across the bustling streets of The Central, Hong Kong, with curious onlookers snapping pictures and creating a definitely buzz.

Distinctively Peranakan, here are some favourites from the media tasting.

Ayam Buah Keluak (stuffed Indonesian black nut with chicken) is one  of Chef Kenny’s signature dishes. A well-known Nyonya dish that is synonymous with Peranakan cuisine, the popular  dish requires expertise and is extremely time consuming to prepare.

The flesh of the Buah Keluak, an Indonesian black nut, is painstakingly extracted, fried with chicken, prawns and rempah (pounded spices), and simmered in a rich  gravy before it  is placed in the empty nut shells.

Babi Pong Teh (braised pork in salted bean paste) is another staple in Peranakan food. The pork belly is braised for hours in salted bean paste gravy with a hint of cinnamon. It is rich and flavoursome, so tender that it melts in your mouth.

Itek Tim is duck soup simmered with salted vegetables, pig's foreleg, preserved sour plums and tomatoes. Sweet and sour, lovely home cook goodness.

Balance the richness of Peranakan food with Nyonya Chap Chye, a light vegetable stew and a home favourite.

Udang Lemak Nenas (Prawns with pineapples in coconut curry) is rich and flavoursome. Another time consuming dish to prepare as fresh  coconut are used. Very lemak and sedap ! My favourite!

Ikan Goreng Cili (fried fish with sambal) is fried cod fish laced with Chef Chan’s special sambal chilli. The crunchy batter fish leaves you craving for more, the chili is to die for and a perfect condiment to add a fiery punch in every dish.

Telur Cincalok (fermented shrimp omelette) is loved by every Peranakan for the tangy taste with a hint of spice.

Nyonya Cendol - The cendol handmade by Chef Chan is soft and light green in colour unlike the acidic green commercial ones. I like mine with lots of Gula Melak ,  its very lemak and ultra sinful and oh so good !

CHARLY T’S RESTAURANT FAMOUS ROTISSERIE CHICKEN AT 112 KATONG SHOPPING MALL

Charly T’s, a casual dining restaurant opened recently at 112 Katong, a premier shopping mall in the east. Known for its global cuisine prepared with fresh, seasonal produce, Charly T’s signature dishes includes American Sloppy Joe, CT’s Beef Burger and Original Recipe Rotisserie Chicken with a variety of home-made dips.

New dishes on the menu are Kansas City BBQ Chicken and the  Black Pepper Chicken rotisserie chickens,  Hawaiian-style Kalua Pork and German Chicken Schnitzel.

Charly T’s I12 Katong restaurant seats approximately 100, including an 8-seater Peranakan decor private dining room designed to reflect Charly T’s eclectic heritage. The “Charly’s Porch” is an alfresco 24 seater dining area, guests can watch “live” sports matches on a 60” widescreen with a complete bar or spend a lazy afternoon chilling out with friends.

At the media tasting, we tried some of Charly T’s favourites.

Charly T’s Original Receipe Rotisserie Chicken with a variety of home-made dips - $13 (quarter chicken + 2 additions), $24 (half chicken + 3 additions) & $42 (whole chicken + 4 additions)

Charly T’s chickens are chilled, but never frozen to keep their freshness before its marinated for over 13 hours and slow-cooked  rotisserie style.  A aromatic chicken with crisp exterior and tender meat awaits.

Homemade Chermoula Sauce (a traditional Moroccan sauce of cilantro, garlic and cc and cayenne pepper sauce), creamy Roasted Sesame Sauce, Kansas City BBQ Sauce and Charly T’s Original Sauce - SPICY or HOT complement its savoury flavour.

A hearty range of Mum’s kitchen side dishes like the German Potato Salad, Macaroni and Cheese and Butter Garlic Rice, completes the meal.

The  Kalua Pork (S$16)  Hawaiian-style is well marinated and slow-cooked to perfection, with a wonderful hint of smoky flavour. Simply melt in your mouth !



CT's Beef Burger ($10.50) Juicy beef patties with fresh lettuce, tomatoes and onions, served with crisps and special sauce.

An  Austrian-German staple, Charly T’s Jumbo Schnitzel Burger chicken (S$14) escalope-style is coated in bread crumbs, fried till golden brown, and served with a generous helping of CT fries for a hearty meal.

Charly T’s also introduces special seasonal items on a regular basis, excerpted from his travel journals to satisfy the travel lust and curious appetites of his fellow, Food Journeyer’s like the Yokohama influenced Negima Salmon Yakitori.

For desserts, try Charly T’s Austrian-German speciality, Kaiserschmarrn ($14) - a light and fluffy pancake shredded and then dusted in powdered sugar, raisins and served with homemade vanilla bean ice cream or the freshly baked Waffles with the Los Angeles inspired  Ice Cream Sandwich.

Charly T honed his skill in mixology while working in London at the popular Lamb and Flag Pub.  Green Flash (a mix of green apple, orange and pineapple) and  Red Tang (a mix of strawberry, cranberry and lychee) ($6.50 each) are his specials and now available at Charly T’s.
