I am Single - Shall I think about Egg Freezing
Freezing eggs early at a younger or earlier age would usually means maintaining egg quality and quantity, healthier eggs and leading to higher chances of successful fertilisation and formation of good quality embryos for pregnancy, later stage in life.
Hitting your late 20s and 30s can come with mixed feelings. Life is busy but a quiet question sometimes appears: what about my fertility?
You might be focused on your career, enjoying independence, dating or still waiting to meet the right person. Thinking about fertility does not mean you are rushing into motherhood, it simply means to understand vour body better.
"Egg freezing today is more about choice than pressure," says Dr Lily Kho Chye Lee, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with Special Interest in Fertility at Alpha IVF Centre & Women's Specialists Singapore.
With more than 15 years of experience, Dr.Lily's expertise spans from early pregnancy care, high-risk pregnancies, miscarriage treatment and gynaecological surgery, supporting patients through different life stages with a gentle, patient-centred approach.
What is Egg Freezing & Process?
A common misconception is that egg freezing is very complicated and stressful. Many imagine long hospital stays, painful procedures, or major lifestyle disruption.
In reality, the process is simple and fits into daily life. It begins with a consultation and basic tests, including a hormone test called Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH), which helps patients understand their egg reserve.
Hormone injections are taken for about 10 to 12 days and are usually self-administered at home, with a few clinic visits during this period to monitor the growth of the follicles.
Egg retrieval itself is a day procedure performed under sedation. Most people go home the same day and return to normal routines within one or two days. There is no long hospital stay, and many continue working and living as usual during the process.
The eggs are then frozen and stored safely.
As age increases, both egg number and quality naturally decrease, especially after the mid 30s.
Freezing eggs are encouraged at earlier age for healthy egg quality and quantity.
35 Years Old Is Still Not Too Late - For Elective Egg Freezing (EEF)
In Singapore, elective egg freezing has been allowed since July 2023. Under current Ministry of Health (MOH) guidelines, those aged 21 to 37 can freeze eggs for non-medical reasons, even if they are single.
However, to use the frozen eggs later for pregnancy, the person must be legally married at the time of use. Elective egg freezing is not subsidized and not covered by Medisave.
Embrace Your Own Flexibility
Some worry about family reactions, social judgement, or what happens if the eggs are never used. Dr Lily reminds her patients that there is no "correct" way to feel.
Egg freezing is often described as fertility insurance, but it is not a guarantee. It does not promise a baby, and it does not remove the need for a partner or fertility treatment later.
What it can offer is more time and less pressure. Often, the hardest step is simply asking the first question: "Should I find out more?"
Dr Lily stresses that a consultation does not mean committing to anything. It is a chance to learn about your body, explore your options, and decide what suits you best.
Egg freezing is just one option among many. It gives more flexibility, and one less thing to worry about while life continues at its own pace.
Extend fertility window, embrace flexibility and reproductive empowerment with egg freezing.
